RONAN – The Savage Horsemen wrestled their way through the Ronan duals last weekend, as the team resumed their season following their holiday break.

Facing off against squads from all over western Montana the Savage Horsemen had a good showing and finished the first day of the two-day competition with two wins and one loss.

“All and all the kids wrestled very well on Friday,” Savage Horsemen Head Coach Kenny Marjerrison said.

The Plains-Hot Springs grapplers defeated the wrestling squad from Townsend 42-24 to open the team’s two days of competition.

The Savage Horsemen built off of their momentum in the team’s first match of the duals, to earn a victory against the Glacier High School junior varsity squad, 55-18.

The win over Glacier earned the Savage Horsemen a match with Frenchtown.

Frenchtown won the match 41-28 but the Savage Horsemen received several strong performances from their wrestlers.

Austin Stafford won the 120-pound bout pinning Tristan Gawronski.

James Detienne took home the victory in the 138-pound weight class winning a major decision 13-0 against Bryce Williams.

In the 145-pound weight class Logan Goodwin of the Savage Horsemen pinned Jonathon Blanchard and Russell Kujala of Plains remained undefeated on the season after pinning Preston Downard in the 152-pound bout.

Wrestling in the 160-pound weight class Savage Horsemen Kane Lawson pinned Tyler King.

The Ronan duals were Lawson’s first match of the season after recovering from a shoulder injury.

Marjerrison was excited to see Lawson on the mat and noted he went 4-1 in his season debut.

The Savage Horsemen, who were knocked out of the championship round by Frenchtown, competed in individual matches throughout the second day of the duals with the team’s athletes getting a couple of chances to wrestle against the various opponents present at last weekend’s duals.

Though Marjerrison was pleased with the team’s overall performance he is looking to work on a couple of areas with his team in future practices.

“We are going to do a lot of drilling. We need to pick up our situational awareness,” Marjerrison said.

Marjerrison mentioned he was looking to see his team put the technique they have learned together and start chain wrestling, combining multiple elements of technique in succession throughout the match, as the season continues.

The Savage Horsemen have a busy week ahead and will host their senior night on Friday, Jan. 9 during the Plains Quad Meet.

During the meet the Savage Horsemen will go up against opponents from Bigfork, Noxon, Florence and Whitefish.

Following the quad meet the Plains-Hot Springs squad will make the trip to Thompson Falls for the Ted Kato Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 10.
