Raffle helps send football team to 8-man camp

PLAINS – As Plains Day was just getting started last weekend raffle tickets were drawn at the Mangy Moose on Railroad Avenue.

Juan Lulack, Head Coach of the Plains Horsemen football team organized the raffle to send the team to a summer football camp in Dillon.

The six man and eight man team football camp will take place at the University of Montana Western and run from Monday, June 8, through Wednesday, June 10.

The upcoming football season will mark Plains High School’s transition from the Class B  athletic conference to Class C. This change is especially notable for the football team who will undergo a transition from the 11-man competition of Class B to the eight-man format of Class C.

“It is an opportunity for all of us to get our feet wet,” Lulack said.

According to Lulack, high school football teams from Noxon, St. Regis and even some squads from Idaho will be in attendance at the western camp.

Lulack said the team’s coaching staff would be joining the players at the camp in Dillon to help facilitate the transition to eight-man football.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for us to get comfortable with eight man. It’s all part of getting a positive mentality before the season,” Lulack said.

Lulack is looking forward to the new season and is excited to see his team learn the fundamentals of eight-man football.

The camp costs $2,060 per team to attend.

Through donations from local businesses and money raised through the raffle the cost of the team’s attendance was paid in full.

There were three prizes up for grabs through last weekend’s raffle.

A rifle, ammunition and a gift card to the Mangy Moose were all part of thedrawing.

The big prize, the rifle, is a 10/22 Ruger.  

The ammo prize, consisted of 1,100 rounds of .22 LR ammunition.

And the Mangy Moose gift card totalled $100.

This week’s camp will introduce the Horsemen to eight man competition giving the team a solid basis to build off of once preseason activity begins in the run up to the 2015 fall football season.

One major difference in eight man competition is the size of the football field.

In Class B teams compete on a field which measures 100-yards, Class C games take place on a slightly smaller playing space, measuring 80-yards from endzone to endzone.
