Suspects sought in St. Regis poaching incident

ST. REGIS – Authorities are still looking for suspects in a poaching case that occurred last week near St. Regis.

Representatives from Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks reported a female black bear was shot and killed illegally, leaving two cubs to fend for themselves.

One cub died from malnutrition while the other survived and was taken to a rehabilitation facility.

While hunting black bears was allowed in the area near Forest Service Road 221, hunting sows with cubs is prohibited.

FWP Mineral County Game Warden Tyler Ramaker said, while he had received some tips regarding the incident, they were still looking for a suspect or suspects. He said there was no new information to report about the case.

“I received some tips,” Ramaker said. “They didn’t really amount to much. They were valid observations but they didn’t really lead anywhere.”

As of time of press, there was no new information regarding the incident.
