Memorial shoot held at Plains Trap Club

PLAINS - Over the weekend, the sounds of gun shots could be heard bouncing off the hills just outside of Plains. The Plains Trap Club was hosting a two day, all day trap shoot, which included not only a day full of shooting, but also camping, camaraderie and food. The event was said to be one of the biggest events for the Trap Club.

“It’s an ATA registered shoot and it’s a two day event, 300 targets each day, singles, doubles and handicap. Today, we are starting out with doubles, singles and then handicap,” said Marvin Rehbein, a Plains Trap Club member.

Rehbein said that the two day event drew 50 to 55 shooters from all over. The parking lot was full and large portion of it was filled with RV’s.

“There’s some guys who drove from Havre and there’s quite a few people from Washington and Idaho... We’ve also got one shooter from Canada,” said Rehbein.

The competitors were all competing for belt buckles and could even bet on their scores if they wanted to with friends. Competitors of all ages were at the event, ranging from under 10 all the way up to retirees.

The money raised from the food, camping, the entry fee for competing, and shells went to the trap club.

Volunteering their time for the event, judging and picking up the shells were teenagers from Plains.

Some of the competitors took the event as practice for upcoming state competitions that will be starting in July. One young and up and coming shooter who has been making a name for himself, Alfred Jermyn, was shooting at the event. Earlier in the week, he was at event in Kalispell won first twice over a two day event.

At the end of the day, the scores were tallied and the prizes were passed out. Some of the competitors had a long drive ahead of them, but to many people’s enjoyment, the clear weather lasted all day into the evening.
