BUTTE – Both Superior basketball teams made it to the divisional tournament in Butte last weekend making them the only representatives from Mineral County to get that far this year.

The Lady Bobcats made the tournament after playing not one but two qualifying games. The Lady Bobcats dropped their first game in the divisional tournament. Head coach Jeff Schultz said watching his team play this year was one of the most satisfying coaching experiences of his tenure at Superior High School.

“It was an emotional game because it was the last time the seniors would get to play,” Schultz said. “The seniors were so dedicated. This season was a lot of fun. I’ve never had a group of girls that loved each other like the ones on this team. This group honestly loved each other from the seniors to the freshmen. That is something I will remember forever.”

The Superior boy’s team had a tough draw in the opening game, facing an undefeated team. The boys lost that match but proceeded to win their next game against Gardiner 59 to 36. Wyatt Zylawy led the team with 21 points followed closely in offensive performance by Aaron Kelly with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Superior needed to win two more games to have a shot at the state title.

Luke Bryce would score 12 points for the Bobcats in their next game but it wasn’t enough to defeat Twin Bridges as the team from Superior would fall 54 to 36. Head coach Chris Toivonen said he was proud of the way the team played this season.

“The kids played really well,” Toivonen said. “We finished tied for fifth. Overall, I think the boys played well together. We had a great season. I’m really proud of what they were able to accomplish.”
