MINERAL COUNTY – The Superior Ranger District recently released information regarding the annual open burning season and it includes what the public can and cannot do when it comes to burning.

The season began on March 1 and will continue until April 30.

During that time, Mineral, County residents are not required to have a burning permit but the notice did include some recommendations regarding safety.

Those wanting to burn yard debris will be required to have a permit beginning on May 1. The permits are available free of charge from the Superior Ranger Station.

According to information in the press release, Montana state law prohibits the burning garbage, dead animals, treated wood, oil, tires or other toxic material. Burning cardboard is allowed but residents are cautioned that ash from cardboard can contain embers that may start spot fires.

More tips for safe burning include checking current and future weather forecasts, not burning on a windy day, having help available when burning and having water and hand tools on hand.

The information said most burns escape control due to changes in wind patterns.

The Superior Ranger District also wants the public to make sure their fires are completely out and to not hesitate to call 911 in the event of an emergency.

Permits can be attained by calling the burn hotline at 406-822-3933 or 406-822-4233 or by picking one up in person.
