Alberton schools celebrate reading

ALBERTON - Students, teachers and administrators at Alberton schools took time out of their busy schedules last week to celebrate an event that fosters an enjoyment of reading in young people.
As part of “I Love to Read Month”, students participated in a number of activities geared toward rewarding them for taking the practice of reading seriously. Alberton Schools Librarian Carole Carlstrom said the event was enjoyed by all who participated including even some of the older students at the high school.
“The high school was invited to participate and the teachers were invited to participate,” Carlstrom said. “We were able to have a prize for each of the participants. We had a medieval fair. That was the theme. We had a masons guild, weavers guild, a stained glass guild and the librarians were the scribe guild.”
Carlstrom said even the staff who prepare the food for the schools got into the act.
“They made us a medieval lunch,” Carlstrom said. “Everyone had a great time. The kids really enjoyed it. The teachers had a great time. It was just a really fun end to a months long reading adventure.”
According to Carlstrom, following the medieval fair was an award ceremony honoring the students who read the most during the month.
“We had kids who read 300 to 700 pages,” Carlstrom said.
