County teams compete in first meet

SUPERIOR - All three Mineral County teams came together for the first meet of the season in Superior last week with Bobcats, Tigers and Panthers all vying for cross-county bragging rights.
The short meet saw teams compete across a wide swath of events including high- jump, javelin, shot put, discus, pole vault and a myriad of other track and field events.
Superior Head Coach Jaime Toivonen said she was pleased with how well the team has come in such a short time.
‘I was really happy with how things went,” Toivonen said. “We were able to get our feet wet. I was really happy with how they did.”
Toivonen said the small meet would be the only one held in Superior this year. She said she was particularly impressed with how the pole vaulters were performing espcially since some of them were new to the event.
She said she was also very impressed with how the younger athletes handled the pressure of competing at the high school level.
She said after spring break, which is this week, the team would take some time to rest aching muscles and then it would be back to the field to prepare for the next meet.
“We are going to take a few days off and then we’ll hit it again,” Toivonen said. “The Darby Invitational is pretty tough. We will be going up against Corvallis which is a class-A school and won the state track meet several years running. It will be tough but we just want to focus on improving every week and just do well. It’s not about winning. It’s about improving every week.”
