PLAINS – Members of the Plains Women’s Club worked to benefit the members of the community last week, as they sewed Christmas stockings for the Sanders County Coalition for Families.

After their regular meeting on Friday, several members of the PWC stayed at the Methodist Church to sew stockings. They used a variety of festive, holiday cloth to make them as full of holiday cheer as possible.

According to Sandy Lane, president of the Women’s Club, the stockings will be delivered to the SCCF where they will be filled with donations from various area businesses. They get a number for how many people are on the SCCF’s list and make stockings for them. The coalition then delivers them to the families and individuals who need them.

The SCCF said they needed between 40 and 50 stockings this year. Lane recalled the women’s club made 55, allowing for extra. They worked from approximately 12:45 pm until 2 pm, sewing and working toward their goal.

As of the weekend, there were still some being made; any extra stockings will be saved for next year’s project.

Lane recalled the experience was lots of fun for everyone. They had a festive time and she recalled there was plenty of joy at being able to help out.

“Even if we do not know exactly where these stockings will be going in the county, we know we’re making a difference on a local level,” she said. “That’s what’s so great about the Plains Women’s Club.”

SCCF works with victims of domestic and sexual abuse around the county. The women’s club does not get involved in the abuse side of things, but they try to help the coalition as best they can; Lane noted many of the people being helped by the SCCF have very little, especially during the holiday season.

As much as the women’s club would like to see an end to having the project, they realize it is an ongoing situation. Still, they are happy to be able to help their own way.

“Unfortunately, there is always that need,” said Lane. “But we want to help and that is a way we can give back without being directly involved in a situation.”
