Lady Bobcats fall against Arlee, win vs. Two Eagle

SUPERIOR – After a strong game, Saturday, where they nearly come back, the Lady Bobcats were defeated by the Arlee Scarlets in three sets.

Both teams played well. In the first set, Superior scored first and started to gain an initial lead. Arlee was able to come back and tie the score, though. The teams kept close for a while before the Scarlets started pulling ahead to gain their own strong lead. While the Lady Bobcats fought to come back, they could not recover and lost the set 17-25.

The second set was much closer. Neither team gained a lead for a long stretch, exchanging ties, before Arlee broke away. The visiting team leapt away and gained a strong lead, overcoming Superior’s defenses. The Lady Bobcats started to pull back but Arlee was able to close out the set in the lead with a score of 20-25.

In the final set, the Scarlets were able to pull ahead to an early lead. The Lady Bobcats started to pull back, but were kept behind at a two to three set gap. Arlee started to pull away, but a sudden turn around nearly tied the game. While the Scarlets kept ahead, the home team rallied and closed the score. It was barely enough, though, and Arlee won the game with a final score of 22-25.

Head Coach Beth Janney felt the scores did not reflect the team’s efforts on the court; she said the girls were working well as a team and played well, even though things did not go their way.

“The girls are playing really well right now and starting to play hard and fight for every point even when things are not in their favor,” she said.

The team made lots of good plays throughout the game. Janney commended Madison Mask and Morgan Sharp’s work as setters. Danielle Ewoniuk and Emma DuBoise were also noted for their hitting against Arlee.

The Lady Bobcats also had a game against Two Eagle River last week. They won the match in three decisive victories with Ewoniuk leading the way with six kills. Janney felt the girls played a hard game and made lots of tought serves against the opposing home team. She felt Marissa Koke was also instrumental with her defense at the net.

This week the girls have three games. Tuesday they played against Alberton’s Lady Panthers; Thursday, October 15, they have a game against the Plains Trotters and Saturday, October 17, they play the Noxon Lady Red Devils. All three games will be at home.

“Both games are our second meetings with the teams,” said Janny of the Plains and Noxon games. “I am excited for the girls to go into the games with more knowledge about how the teams play.”

During practices, the Lady Bobcats are working on their offensive game. Janney noted they had a good defense, but still tended to make errors when they had possession of the ball.

“Our defense continues to frustrate other teams, but we have to pick it up on the offensive end and make sure the ball ends up on the other teams side more than it does on our side,” she said.
