ST. REGIS – The St. Regis Lady Tigers were defeated in their Tuesday game against the Plains Trotters, but not before putting up a fight for a neck and neck competition.

The first set was close with the teams keeping each other on their toes. The Trotters were able to pull ahead several times, but the Lady Tigers pulled them back into a tie each time. Late in the set, though, Plains broke away, pulling ahead to closed out the set with a score of 19-25.

The St. Regis girls broke away early in the second set, gaining a strong lead. Plains suddenly rallied, though, and leapt ahead to pass St. Regis. The Lady Tigers were able to push back ahead, breaking through Plains’ defenses. The set was neck and neck when the Trotters inched past to win the set 21-25.

It was looking bad for St. Regis as the third set began, but the girls rallied and leapt ahead. They broke through Plains’ defense and hit the ball into opening after opening, pushing the score ever higher. The Lady Tigers had their second win as they closed out the set with a 29-9 win.

Plains was able to rally their own forces, though, pulling ahead in the fourth set and holding it until the Lady Tigers tied the score at 12 points. St. Regis pulled ahead, keeping their own lead as each team made good plays. The Trotters were able to catch up, though, and after a close game, pushed ahead to a final win of 23-25.

Head Coach Jen Pruitt felt her team played well. She recalled they moved around the court well and improved in a number of areas they had been struggling with. While there were some issues with missing some balls, Pruitt felt they were an issue of the shot not being aimed where they could get it.

“The ones they didn’t pick up, they just weren’t lined up well,” she said.

The coach felt the girls all did well and did not see any single standout performances. The girls played well as a team with everyone working together and contributing to the plays.

Next week the girls will have two games. On Thursday, they will play against the Noxon Lady Red Devils at home and Friday, they go to Superior to play against the Lady Bobcats. Pruitt was confident about how the games would go; she felt they had improved over the course of the season as well as making changes to their defense and offense. The changes had already proven effective against other teams.

During practice this week, the Lady Tigers have been working to improve their movement and moving the ball around the court. One area Pruitt felt the team still needed some work was to not root themselves in one spot.
