Ryan Ovitt scored 16 points and Class C Plains used a huge first quarter to roll past Class B Thompson Falls 58-29 Saturday in the season-opener for both teams.

“Intensity-wise, we came out defensively very strong,” Plains coach Mike Cole said. “We probably caught Thompson Falls with a new group of kids and I thought our ball pressure rattled them a little bit early.”

The Horsemen (1-0) led 24-4 after one quarter and 33-6 at halftime before coasting to the finish line.

Aaren VonHeeder was right behind Ovitt with a career-high 15 points, and the senior added a team-leading eight rebounds in the win.

“Probably Aaren’s best game,” Cole said. “He started for us last year but this was by far his best game with a varsity uniform on. He led us with a big charge in rebounding.”

Payton Frields led Thompson Falls (0-1, 0-1) with 10 points. Danny Hoisington chipped in seven in a losing effort.
