THOMPSON FALLS – Traditional country music will be coming to Thompson Falls this week as the High Country Cowboys perform at the Rex Theater.

The band plays old-style country music, featuring covers of hit songs as well as some of their own original work. According to Merici Kosel, the shows feature old Marty Robins songs, yodeling and a general classical western feel with traditional music. They do not feature many modern pieces, though Kosel noted one of the members’ wives often sang might have one or two modern songs if she was part of the show.

The band features the three Kosel brothers John, Joe and Marty. According to their website, they had a desire to bring back the days of Roy Rogers as well as Gene Autry and the cowboys of the silver screen. Their first live performance for an audience was in 2013 and they have since played various shows; their website notes they regularly play at the Pollard Hotel in Red Lodge.

The band is a true family endeavor with one brother writing many of the songs. The brothers, as well as one of their wives, also sing in many of their songs. Kosel noted Joe made a number of the guitars they use during the shows. Their album covers also feature the painting skills of John.

The band has been together for approximately eight years. However, Kosel said they joke about having been together longer since they came from a musically talented family; the brothers did family brass bands and other similar musical endeavors for years before playing as a band professionally.

“They had lots of music in the evenings and they’d play and practice,” Kosel said.

This is the first time the band will be playing in Thompson Falls. Many of the members live in the area, but most of their performances have been outside the Sanders County area. The show is family friendly and people of all ages are welcome to attend. The show begins at 7 pm on Friday, January 5. For information contact the Rex Theater at 425-4630, or John Kosel at 446-3855.
