PLAINS – The Plains boys basketball team won a decisive victory against the St. Regis Tigers, claiming a win with a score of 79-39.

The game opened with a close battle as Plains got on the board first with the Tigers right behind with a three-point shot of their own. The Horsemen gained the lead, then broke away to reach a strong advantage. St. Regis tried to come back with a three-point basket, but a three-point shot by Plains maintained the lead. The Horsemen gave a final push to increase their lead and closed the quarter with a score of 24-10.

Plains maintained their lead in the second quarter, keeping ahead of their Mineral County neighbor. The Tigers fought back, and gained some ground, but were unable to pull back against the Horsemen’s advantage. The half ended with a score of 48-21.

The home team opened their lead even more in the second half. The Tigers tried to fight back, and gain ground back, but the lead was too strong. St. Regis’ Brock Cantrell-Field got a nice steal for two points with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter, but the Horsemen were too far ahead and they could not break the Plains defense further.

Head Coach Carl Benson said they had been stressing executing plays and running offense during games. He felt the team had responded well and it showed in how they played the game. It was noted the older players did a good job of managing the plays and they were able to bring the less experienced players in to get some practical game time.

“They did really well, it was really good to see,” said Benson. “We got a good effort from all 12 kids tonight and that’s what we like to have.”

The coach also praised the team for being unselfish and sharing the load during a game. He recalled they were always passing well and trying to make their teammates look good on the court. He said he liked to see this and it made for a good team dynamic.

This week, the Horsemen take on the Noxon Red Devils for their senior night, then they have an away game against Two Eagle River.
