After School Program gears up for the new year

The Alberton After School Program is starting the new year with some fun new activities. The program, which boosts around 15-20 kids per day between 4 and 6 p.m., will start with “Make it Monday.”  “Currently, the kids are making robots outs of ‘up-cycled’ materials with items such as boxes and cans,” said Program Supervisor, Crystal Forrider. 

The definition for Up-cycling is: To reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.  

This is a great way to teach the kids ways that they can reuse items, rather than just throwing them away.  Pinterest has a plethora of up-cycle items. Things such as storage tables made out of old suitcases, or yard decoration made out of old tires that have been painted and remodeled.   

The kids will also get their exercise on “Keep it Moving Tuesdays”.  For the next couple of weeks, they will be putting on their groove and doing some dancing.  “Wow ‘Em Wednesdays” is a day of science exploration and discovery. Starting this month, the kids will be learning how to play Chess. On “In the Mood for Food”, they will be learning how to make healthy snacks, like frozen yogurt bites, scrambled eggs, and granola bars.
