Icy roads cause school delays

Icy roads played havoc with drivers last Wednesday, including school bus drivers. Both Alberton and Superior called for a two-hour delay on starting their school day in order to deal with the poor road conditions.

The bulk of the bad weather was toward the east end of the Clark Fork Valley. According to the National Weather Service, there was freezing rain between Frenchtown and St. Regis that morning. With reports of slide-offs and multiple jackknifed semis on I-90. Including one reported at 4:40 a.m. at Fish Creek, located five miles west of Alberton, which blocked the passing lane. 

According to the Highway Patrol’s website, there were 16 incidents between 6 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. in several counties including Cascade, Flathead, Gallatin, Big Horn, Broadwater, Lake, Ravalli, Jefferson, Mineral and Silverbow.

Four of those incidents were between Superior and River bend. No serious injuries were reported.

Heavy snow and slick roads continued to pound the area dumping three to five inches over the weekend. With more snow scheduled for the upcoming week.
