Feeding families in Mineral County

| November 30, 2016 4:00 AM

November 2011 was the first Holiday Food Drive initiated by Mineral Community Hospital (MCH) to help those in need in our county through the holidays. Each year since, the MCH has gathered more in poundage, as well as distribution locations between Alberton and St. Regis.

The donated food has been delivered weekly to either the Alberton Food Pantry or the Mineral County Food Bank for distribution to their clients. These are the only two food depositories yet they serve hundreds of people.

Title VI has a Food Distribution Program for those over 62 on a limited income that delivers food commodities every other month to their cliental, but for individuals and families in need, these two outlets stay very busy. Town Pump/Lucky Lil’s has a cash-donation Food Drive statewide each year from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 with a dollar-for-dollar match up to $5,000 in each county that has a Town Pump or Lucky Lil’s. All the money raised is not only matched, but remains in each county that participates.

Bonnie Fuller, Food Drive Coordinator for Town Pump/Lucky Lil’s in Superior, approached MCH last year to see if they could help them reach their goal. The employees of MCH contributed over $500 to that food drive, and still gathered over 5,000 pounds for the Holiday Food Drive.

For 2016, MCH will be presenting nearly $2,000 to the Town Pump/Lucky Lil’s Food Drive, thanks to a very generous donation from Wells Fargo Bank through the Mineral County Medical Foundation to help us, help this critical food drive.

With less than 30 days remaining in the Holiday Food Drive, the goal is to collect 5,000 pounds of non-perishable food as the MCH asks the community to assist. The drop off locations are at Alberton Feed & Supply, Castles Market, Wells Fargo Bank in Superior, Partnership Health Center – Mineral County, the Jack Lincoln Memorial Clinic, St. Regis Senior Center and the in lobby of MCH.
