The snow has finally melted on the fields, just in time for track season to begin at area high schools. Athletes from St. Regis, Superior and Alberton packed their gear and headed to Frenchtown for their first meet of the season, the Jim Johnson meet. Johnson is a retired teacher from Alberton and started the tournament nine year ago. He was there again this year, with his stop watch, timing runners as they crossed the finish line.

The meet gets the teams warmed up as they vie for top spots this season, with some already setting sights on State. St. Regis coach, Brooks Sanford said some of his team favored to qualify for State are Brock Cantrell-Field in Javelin and discus, Brandon Managhan in high jump, Madison Hill and in the 1600 meter run, Madison Kelly.

Frenchtown came in first in the boy’s teams, followed by Thompson Falls and Powell County. There were 16 teams overall, with St. Regis placing sixth and Clark Fork finishing 12. With the girl’s teams, Drummond came in first, followed by Frenchtown, and Deer Lodge, third. Clark Fork finished at 11, and St. Regis, 13.

In individual scores Clark Fork’s Jesse Shaske came in fifth place in both the 400 and 800 meter races at 57.53 and 2:18.31. Teammate, Griffin Pluth finished fourth in the 3200 meter run at 11:38.03.

St. Regis Brock Cantrell-Field, finished in third place in both discus and javelin, with 134-3 and 157-03. He also came in fourth in shot put at 41-10. Also from St. Regis, Brandon Managhan, hit second place in the high jump, long jump and triple jump with scores of 6-0, 19-10 and 40-1.

In the girl’s 100 meter dash Clark Fork’s Sophia Krutilla placed fourth with 13.94 and in the 400 meter Clark Fork Kathryn Parkin placed fourth with 1:10.71 and St. Regis Emma Hill placed sixth with 1:11.61. Madison Kelly placed third in both the 800 meter and the 1600 meter run with 2:50.37 and 5:57.35. With Clark Fork’s Hailey Kelly throwing 110-7 and placing second in javelin.
