Conrad Vanderwall of the Savage Horsemen works to get a pin on his Thompson Falls opponent at the Plains Quad.

Fallen Savage Horsemen wrestling coach Kenny Marjerrison was honored at the recent Wrestling Quad match in Plains.

The Savage Horsemen hosted the match as their 2017 season kicks off for the winter sport.

Thompson Falls, Eureka and Arlee teams all assembled at Plains High School to get the kinks out before a full season of traveling.

The night began with honoring the four seniors being presented by their loved ones to a full gym of support.

Daniel Uli, Austin Stafford, Robert Mathers and Luke Lile all presented strong in front of the home crowd and visiting teams.

Lile also paid tribute to his former head coach saying,” thank you to Kenny Marjerrison for tying my shoes in little guy wrestling and high school. Also, for being the father figure to this band of brothers called the Savage Horsemen.”

Once the seniors were presented they went back to join their team as the lights dimmed in the gymnasium to the letters KLM illuminating on the wall as though Marjerrison was looking down upon all students and of course his wrestlers.

Once a moment of silence was complete, the gym went from being able to hear a pin drop to slowly being filled with that of the National Anthem as the lights slowly began to shine on Old Glory.

Not long after, the crowd and the wrestlers took one last long breathe, the night began with two mats in play.

As the wrestlers matched up, going back and forth between the mats, coaches splitting up into teams themselves; the home side started out strong with their first handful of wrestlers taking wins.

Thompson Falls also showed a strong side with their team following each player across the gym in support of their matchup.

Eureka also boosted a strong side from along the circle with the team ensuring they also gave great support to their wrestler in play.

Arlee was a standout in presence as coaches from the side wore specially made team shirts in memoriam for Marjerrison and his influence to them.

Boasting the red and white colors, both male and female wrestlers took to the mats wth much conviction to look for those solid wins.

Then of course were the Savage Horsemen who looked to pull out more then just skills on the mats. The guys and gals that presented at the quad match dug deep to show the three teams just what they can expect during the long season ahead.

Head coach Jeff Kujala said he was impressed with how his team of Savage Horsemen picked up from their quad match last Thursday to the Bob Kinney Classic over the weekend.

“The team overall did extremely well, we placed seventh overall as a team and had four wrestlers take top placings,” he said.

The only downer for the coach was an injury sustained to wrestler Mason Gannarrelli.

“I’m not sure of the full extent of his injury at this stage, so we will wait and see what doctors say,” said Kujala.

Savage Horsemen Daniel Uli took out the Outstanding Wrestler Award while Josiah Vanderwall took home the Quick Pin Award from the Classic.
