Hospital Hikers

As part of a campaign to address the issue of ‘lack of exercise; obesity’ substantiated in the Community Health Improvement Plan taken in Mineral County last spring, Mineral Community Hospital initiated a hiking program focused on getting people outdoors to enjoy the wonderful trails, lakes and vistas that make up the majority of our landscape. 2016 was the first year and consisted of a core group of 8-10 for the 5 hikes that were completed (2 were rained out). However, by the end of the season, other people heard about this group and asked to be involved in 2017.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 5:15 p.m. in the Superior Ambulance Facility, 1202 Fifth Ave. E. the “Hospital Hikers” will meet to discuss/plan destinations, dates and determine who will be the head-guide for the spring and summer of 2017. Mineral County has over 50 mountain lakes that are accessible only by trails and the group will determine which ones will be on the agenda. It’s important to note that anyone and everyone is invited to join this group as hikes are designed from beginner to intermediate with an emphasis on families with young children and dog-friendly dogs. One of the hikers lives in Hamilton and will guide hikes into the Bitterroots of that region which will start sooner than the ones in County 54 where snow accumulation prohibits passage until after July 4.

Anyone who is interested in molding this year’s hiking-schedule is encouraged to attend this meeting. For those who just care to hike-wherever, the Kick-Off will be held in June. Flyers will be posted so hikers can plan for a summer of outdoor hiking and media outlets will receive the full schedule for publication. Hikes will also be posted on the Community Calendar at www.mineralcommunityhospital.net. For questions, please contact Monte Turner at 822-5122.
