Holiday travel breaks records for 2016

| January 6, 2017 11:29 AM

More than 103 million Americans were expected to travel for the year-end holidays, according to American Automobile Association (AAA). That’s the highest number ever recorded. The reason for the increase is a result of improvements in the labor market and rising wages. Additionally, low gas prices and increased consumer optimism prompted more Americans to travel for the holidays.

Currently, gas prices are hovering around $2.18 in Superior with the national average at $2.32 for regular and $2.48 for diesel. These gas prices reflect the second-cheapest in nearly a decade, with AAA estimating U.S. drivers have saved more than $27 billion at the gas pumps so far this year compared to the same period last year.

Most travelers drove over the holiday, with an estimated 93.6 million people on the roads. This is an increase of 1.5 percent over last year. Air travel was expected to increase by 2.5 percent, with more than 6 million Americans flying to their holiday destinations.

New York, Las Vegas, Orlando, San Diego, and Anaheim top the list for the most popular holiday destinations, according to the report.
