•Public meeting planned for Soldier-Butler project

The Ninemile Ranger District of the Lolo National Forest will host a meeting from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at the Ninemile Ranger Station Visitor Center to provide information and answer questions related to the Soldier-Butler Project, which is currently in the public scoping period. Members of the planning team will be in attendance and Erin Phelps, the district ranger, encourages all those who are interested and/or affected by the project to attend.

“The Soldier-Butler Project is really a community-driven project,” Phelps commented, “and we want to ensure we hear from the community early on in this process so we can move forward together.”

The purpose of this project includes reducing the potential for high severity wildfire on the National Forest adjacent to private property. The 45,160-acre analysis area is about seven miles northwest of Huson and extends from the East Fork of Burnt Fork Creek southwest to Butler Creek and from the Ninemile Road No. 412 to the Reservation Divide. The project includes proposals to manage both vegetation and the transportation system in the area.

The scoping period ends on Jan. 17. More information can be found on the website, http://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/lolo/landmanagement/projects, which also includes electronic maps of the proposed treatments and associated transportation system for easier viewing.

The Ninemile Ranger Station is located at 20325 Remount Road, Huson, MT 59846. If you have any questions related to the project or the meeting, contact Tami Paulsen, planning team leader, at 406-329-3731.
