From “The Thing About Jellyfish” to “Call of the Osprey”; from “The Bear and the Piano” to “Feathers: Not Just For Flying” — these are just a few of the new children’s books available at the Mineral County Library thanks to a Children’s Book Project grant award from the Pilcrow Foundation.

The Foundation award was enhanced by a wonderful donation of science and math books from Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman.

“In these hard budgetary times, it’s fantastic to have so many new children’s books donated – 63 in all” Library Director Guna K. Chaberek said. “Opening the imaginations and opportunities for learning to rural children may have unimagined benefits for the kids and for society in coming years.”

The local Friends of the Library provided $200 as the local contribution to the grant award. Pilcrow added to this on a 2 to 1 basis, bringing about the acquisition of $601.39 worth of books, 38 in all. And then Berenson and Ackerman provided 24 Math and Science books worth $401.45. A bonus book “A Morning with Grandpa” by Sylvia Liu brought the total to 63.

Mineral County library was selected for the sponsorship through a generous donation from Bill Strawbridge and Meg Wallhagen of California.

The Pilcrow Foundation was founded in 2013 to continue the work of the Libri Foundation. The goal of the group is to “recognize the importance of public libraries in rural communities,” a mission statement from Pilcrow states. It continues: “Literacy is the greatest gift we can give to our children; the public library is where we can start.”

The County Library will offer several storytimes on Saturday, January 28, at 11 a.m., to celebrate the gift of these books. Several local readers will attend, including retired teacher Linda Zimmer. Cake will be offered throughout the day.

For a complete list of the 63 new children’s books, please contact the Mineral County Library at 301 2nd Ave. East, Superior, or phone 822-3563.

“We need more people and groups who recognize that reading is vitally important for all ages, but particularly for children,” Chaberek said. “We (at the library) simply cannot thank these good people enough for their generosity.”

“And don’t forget our normal weekly storytimes for tots Thursdays at 11 a.m!” reminds Florence Evans, Superior Branch Librarian.
