Horsemen, Trotters take down Charlo

The Plains Horsemen remain undefeated in conference play this season after picking up an 80-38 District 14C win over Charlo at home Saturday.

Plains was able to pick up several points from the foul line in the contest as Charlo was called for several technical fouls.

Charlo coach Gale Decker yelled at his players to “Find the hole, get the weakness” and “Get that ball in there.” His players tried valiantly many times to rattle the Horsemen and find any weakness, only to wind up frustrated and exhausted.

Several times, Decker talked with one of the referees and complained there were fouls happening, only to have a short side-conference on the sideline and have the referee reply, “There was no physical contact.”

Plains players were very fast at setting and maintaining their solid defense to limit the Charlo players to mainly passing and searching for ways to score more points. The Horsemen outscored Charlo by more than a three-to-one ratio in the third and by almost the same margin in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Ovitt led the Plains effort with 22 points while Jay VonHeeder added 16. Alec Cole was also in double figures with 13.

The Trotters survived a close game at home Saturday as they defeated the visiting Vikings.

Plains took the lead early in the first quarter and held back the Vikings with consistent shooting from Lindsay Laws and Jessica Thompson. Charlo appeared to be unable to find or even create any weakness in the Plains offense, trying many unsuccessful times to keep the Trotters from getting the basketball into the hoop. The Trotters defense was solid in their performance, only allowing four Charlo players to score with only one Viking reaching double figures.

Laws led the Trotters with 15 points in the win while Thompson was also in double figures with 10.
