116 cars rolled into the 18th Annual Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show in Superior on June 2 and 3.

“It was a kicked-back, relaxing day,” said car show coordinator, Mike Curtain. He was pleased to see that many cars which was up from 90 cars last year and 107 the year before. “We saw a lot of new people and new cars.”

Awards went to the top 12 cars but Curtain said they needed a top 40 because it was hard to narrow it down. The car owners who register vote on the top picks and Tricon Timber owner, Ken Verley supplied the trophies.

Best of Show went to Jerry and Suzy Gray for their 1952 Buick Riviera; Robin Ellenwood came in second with a 1932 Plymouth Coupe. Paul and Christine Kruger placed third with a 1934 Dodge Pickup and Doug Ruffatto came in fourth with his 1957 Chevy Belair.

In fifth place was Terry Sunderland with a 1967 Chevy Camaro; and Glen and Patty Wainwright placed sixth with a 1936 Nash Lafayette. Lafe Larson came in seventh with a 1970 Chevy Nova SS; Dick Moon, eighth with a 1957 Pontiac Starchief; in ninth was Charlie and Bonnie Mekeal with a 1939 Chevy 4-door; in tenth, Wel and Debbie Young with a 1960 GTO; in eleventh was Jack Geis with a 1947 Anglia Coupe and in twelfth was Fred Fike with a 1934 Ford Truck.

Founder’s Choice award went to Dennis Black for a 1936 Diamond Truck Model 221; Veteran’s Choice was a 1941 Willy truck owned by Ray Simpson. Sheriff’s Choice was a 1970 Chevy Chevelle owned by Larry Wainwright; and Mayor’s Choice was Ken and Kathy Verley’s 1955 Lincoln Capri and Holiday Trailer. The People’s Choice award went to Ron Stortz 1955 Ford F100. Other awards were Unfinished which went to Roger Horn’s 1969 Chevy Camaro. The Hard Luck award went to Marty Meeks 1947 Ford Model T and the Hard Luck Honorable Mention went to Mike Curtain’s 1978 Plymouth Volare and 1966 Ford F100.

The longest distance traveled went to Chris Brown from Box Elder with his 1955 Chevy Truck. Ron Gleason got the Best Bike award for his 1970 Honda Trail 90 and Dal Smilie got Best Combo for his 1948 Stedebaker and Wright Trailer. Best Combo unfinished went to Pat Horn’s 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass and Trailer. St. Regis student, Madison Hill helped to hand out the trophies. She was one of the recipients of the Mineral County Community Foundation scholarship which is partially funded by the car show.

In addition to awards and cars, attendees were able to feast on burgers from the Relay for Life teams, Vikings from the Mineral Community Hospital, and several other food booths. There were also raffles, a Poker Walk, and other vendors.

Mike Huckins had helped with the car show for years and recently passed away. To show appreciation for his years of volunteer help his wife, Sharon, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation signed by all of the car people.

Curtain credits additional advertising and word-of-mouth for the increased attendance this year.

“I just mention the show every chance I can get,” he said.
