Open burning season began March 1 and continues through April 30.

Permits are not required for burning conducted during this time period. After May 1, burn permits are required for any burning.

“Once you strike the match you are responsible for making sure your debris burn doesn’t escape your control,” said Bobby Henderson, fire prevention officer for the Superior Ranger District, Lolo National Forest.

Some safety factors to consider when burning are to burn in small piles so the fire will be hot but manageable. Also, wait until it rains or snows. Wet the area down around the piles and clear the area around the pile of dry flammable material and have bare soil within several feet. When creating the piles, make sure they are in openings away from overhead branches, wires, and structures and keep water and tools close by.

Don’t burn when conditions are windy, and always check to make sure the fire is dead out.

State law prohibits the burning of animal droppings, garbage, old mattresses, stained or painted wood, dead animals, tires, oil, or any other toxic material.
