The Plains Woman’s Club was very busy much of Saturday March 18 as four women were in the Sanders County Fairgrounds pavilion preparing food and cooking many items for 150 meals. Those meals would be served at the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) dinner, raffles, and auction held later that evening.

Shirley Nettleton, Dayna Nettleton, Pat Farmer, and Terri Henry arrived around 10:00 a.m. to begin preparing cupcakes, twice-baked potatoes, baked chicken, and prime rib roasts for the 150 guests they were expecting.

“I think that three cows were probably needed for this dinner,” Terri Henry laughed and said, while she began to season the very large prime rib roasts in the cooking pans.

Pat Farmer and Shirley Nettleton made cupcakes that would later be dipped into a peach puree and then covered with a rich icing. Both women were using very large mixing bowls to make the batters and purees that would soon be usd to create the very rich and flavorful deserts.

“We will be here today until we are finished,” Farmer said while she was preparing the peach puree for the cupcakes using a food processor.

When the dinner happened, there were other members of the Plains Woman’s Club who had arrived by 6 p.m. and were the servers for the dinner. Those women who served the dinners were Terri Henry, Margaret Storoy, Nita Dyches, Michelle Furry, Lores Porter, Shirley King, Adriene Galinat, Sandi Lane, Joy Nelson, Anna Sparks, and Ellen Childress.

The Plains Woman’s Club is a non-profit organization that is very active in many different things throughout the year in Plains and the surrounding area, including taking care of the old one-room school on Railroad Avenue, cleaning areas near MT Highway 200 where the new Plains map and sign are located on the east end of town, cooking meals for other groups, holding an annual Christmas lighting contest, selling bulbs, sponsoring the Missoula Children’s Theatre plays, sponsoring the Shakespeare in the Parks, and much more.
