May is a busy month for local schools as end-of-the-year activities fill the calendar. Mrs. Crabb’s Superior School fourth grade class spent Thursday, May 25, learning about pond ecology, and how to cast a fishing pole. They also went on a nature walk around Savenac and toured Tricon Timber.

At Alberton the student council traveled to Helena on Monday to learn about the state legislature. The fifth grade class had an egg drop on Tuesday to learn about aerodynamics. The Kindergarten class traveled to the Montana Natural History Center in Missoula on Tuesday and a group of students will travel to Silverwood on Monday May 29.

St. Regis held their Academic awards night on Wednesday, May 24 where each teacher recognized two students from their class for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Science teacher, Chris West gave the keynote speech and introduced Derek Larson, who received the 2017 Inspirational Teacher of the Year award. Larson is the school’s music teacher.

There were several Spring Concerts with Superior and St. Regis on May 16. Superior High School presented a “Disney” concert on May 24. Alberton also held their Spring concert and Art Show on May 24. St. Regis held their annual music department fundraiser Pops Concert and dinner on May 22 and 23. The theme was a tribute to the 80s.

Graduation was held on May 28 for Alberton and Superior where Denise Juneau was the key note speaker for Alberton. She was the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and ran for U.S. Congress last year. St. Regis held their graduation on May 30. A full graduation report will be featured in the June 7 issue of the Mineral Independent.

Road conditions

The Lolo National Forest Service reported on May 24 that the Trout Creek road is open within 100 yards of the Heart Lake Trailhead. The first mile of the trail is patchy and then full of snow. On Dry Creek the road is open within a mile of Diamond Lake and on Little Joe North Fork the road to the top saddle that intersects with road 431 is open. On Little Joe South Fork the road is open to the Little Joe Slide and approximately three miles up to road 3814. Cold Creek road 3803 is open to 16915.

Governor’s Office volunteer recognition

Superior Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Rob Torrey received a surprised last week when he received a letter from Montana Governor, Steve Bullock. Torrey has been nominated for recognition through the Governor’s Office of Community Service for his outstanding volunteer work in Mineral County.

“I appreciate your willingness to devote extra time and energy into helping others in their time of need,” the letter stated.
