Montana Aussie Adventures with Erin-Jay

Halloween has come and gone, and the snow has made its way to Sanders County.

Halloween was a blast, and with all or most of the fall leaves fallen on the ground, there was most certainly a magic in the air that can only mean it is that favorite holiday of mine.

Watching the kids go up and down the main street of Plains, then ducking in and out of the many houses, I have to say it was a real treat to celebrate Halloween in Sanders County this year.

But, would or could you have guessed that not even 24 hours after we would see the first snow of the season.

Now I understand that most of you are probably thinking not yet, as I have heard winter can last for a few months and snow can pile up quite easily and frequently.

Though for this Aussie, I am used to living in very hot and humid conditions. Shoot, my winter back in North Queensland would only get on average 60 degrees and that is cold….

So for me, I am loving the cooler weather, even if I have to shovel snow that is OK, I can live with that. I do though understand the novelty of shoveling will most likely wear off after the second time I have to shovel my long driveway by hand. That’s OK though because I just love how pretty the snow looks in the morning.

If you have spent any time with me talking about some great movies or some of my favorite TV shows, you would know I am a huge “Gilmore Girls” fan. What keeps coming to mind is that of Lorelei (main character), she says she can smell the snow when it is about to fall. Now I can’t smell the snow, but I wish I could; and I so agree that there is a special magic that comes when the snow does fall. No matter if it is a light flurry or a blizzard, there is something clean, clear and wonderful when the world turns white.

Which brings me to my other conundrum, driving in the snow. Yep snow and ice driving are new to me. I feel like the high school kids who just got their license and this will be their first winter driving.

Funny enough, my younger cousin on the East Coast just got his license about month ago, and I joked with his mom that we are both getting our winter driving firsts at the same time.

It is certainly something different, but I am glad that I was able to get my snow studded tires on just in the nick of time. I’ll be honest, the first time someone had said that there were such things as studded tires, I thought I was getting my leg pulled. Again, I am use to rain during the wet season, other than that Queensland is known for near year-round sunshine, hence why we’re called the Sunshine State.

But none the less, I am looking forward to seeing the town and county come alive for the winter season and see the other side of this vibrant county.
