Cancer Network hosts lantern lighting

The lighting and releasing of lanterns for cancer has become a worldwide tradition to not only remember those that are lost but those that have survived.

Originally starting in Thailand, the lighting and releasing of lanterns into the sky was to symbolize those who are letting go of worries and problems. The Thai people considered these floating lanterns as a sign of good luck as they said the word Khom loi.

Though most cultures see traditions change, such as this of lantern launching.

The Cancer Network of Sanders County will once again be hosting their annual Lantern Launch on Nov. 25 at the Sanders County Fair Grounds.

Each year the event has grown and as such become a favorite staple for locals to take part in.

The Cancer Network of Sanders County anticipates that this year’s event will see up to 100 lanterns launched into the night sky.

This will also mark the last event for the local organization for the year as families prepare for the upcoming holiday season.

Lanterns are available to purchase from select local businesses around Plains such as McGowans and Gambles.

The nights festivities will kick off around 5 p.m. on Nov. 25, but should there be some rain, snow or wind around the launch time will delay. The Cancer Network welcomes everyone to the event.

“Even if you don’t wish to purchase a lantern, come join us and lend a hand launching the many lanterns for people who could not attend on their own,” said Kathy Miller of the Cancer Network.
