Students enjoy Talk (and Walk!) Like a Pirate Day

It was all hands on deck at the Mineral County Library’s first Talk Like a Pirate Day program held on Sept. 19 after school. Around 30 landlubber hearties gathered and played games, walked the plank, drew their own treasure maps and drank pirate punch.
Participants received their pirates name when entering the party. Following the instructions on a sheet of names, they took the first letter of their first name, the last letter of their first name and the first letter of their last name and matched it to the pirate name on the list to come up with their own pirate identity.
Library Director Guna Chaberek (Money Buckets Stinksalot) and librarian Florence Evans (Fishy Slappy McGee) were happy and surprised at the turn out. The crowd was comparable to the annual pumpkin decorating contest, which is one of their more popular events.
The young pirates, complete with a sailor hat and eye patch, were navigated by Capt. Ruthless Von Joe (Roger Brown) and played throwing games, which included knocking down cans, a bean bag toss and a ring toss over an alligator tail. Once the young mates completed the games they fished some booty from the treasure chest.
International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created by John Baur and Mark Summers in 1995, and has since grown in popularity, now boasting its own website and booty including T-shirts, mugs, buttons and more.
