Everybody loves a donkey and audience members were able to show their affection during half-time of Donkey Basketball in St. Regis on March 28.

Final Four-legged fever hit Mineral County last week as donkeys hit the floor boards in the St. Regis gym. The junior high school class brought the floppy-ear critters to town through Donkey Sports Inc. as a fundraiser where students and staff from St. Regis and Superior faced-off for braying rights.

St. Regis staff were decked out in bright pink t-shirts with on-court names like Coach Pepe (aka, Jesse Allan); Music Man, Derek Larson; April (The Councilor) Quinlan; and Sarge in Charge, Joe Steele. These skilled equestrians stampeded their mighty stallions up and down the court in a dizzying array of true sportsmanship on March 28. Where Yeagy (aka Tim Yeager) put up shots for two-pointers, while defending Superior teacher, Beaut Servo, grabbed rebounds and trotted down the court to shoot and score.

Throughout the evening, school staff played each other, students played staff and students played fellow students. All with precision and skill, despite some never having rid a donkey in their life.

Sometimes things got out of control as a wild donkey ran circles around the court with its rider pulled alongside it, with true donkey water-skiing finesse. Jesse Allan was bit by an opposing team’s donkey and was also bucked off by his own mount. Despite obstacles of both the furry and human kind, team members managed to play their ten minute games with amazing riding skills.

Nine staffers played from St. Regis, five from Superior, eight St. Regis students and 11 Superior students. In the first game, St. Regis staff, the “Bench Warmers” played the students and won. Next, the Superior staff went head-to-head against Superior students and won 6 to 4.

The game for third place was students from each school where Superior won, 12 to 7. In the Championship game, staff members squared off and after ten minutes of great plays, strategic offense and defensive moves by both teams, the Superior staff won, 8-4.
