Ambulance service members explain why they are running for hospital board

| April 10, 2018 6:25 AM

People in Mineral County are wondering, “Why are five members of the Superior Area Ambulance Service running for the Hospital Board?” To prevent the rumor mill from taking over, we will address this question. Our primary motive is to improve patient care. We understand the financial aspect of the hospital is very important, but do not believe it should supersede patient care.

Decisions being made by the Hospital Administration do not appear to be in the best interest of patient care, and we would like to be in a position to get the reasoning behind these decisions. If appropriate we would support them, if not, fight for what is right. We will not make any promises on what we will accomplish. However, if elected we will work to improve patient care, support the staff, and bring transparency to the decisions being made for Mineral Community Hospital. It is an essential institution in our county.

Serving on the ambulance service not only gives us the opportunity to work closely with hospital personnel, but also allows us to see what actually happens in a way others do not. We have developed an understanding of specific patient and practitioner needs, transporting patients to other critical access hospitals and working with other providers.

Networking at trainings and advisory groups locally and regionally adds to this knowledge base. We have a unique perspective to offer. Being EMTs, patients, and family members of patients, we believe we can use our knowledge and experiences to help Mineral Community Hospital improve for the sake of our community.

There is a forum scheduled on April 18 at 7 to 9 p.m. for Hospital Board candidates. Unfortunately, some of us have prior engagements and will be unable to attend. We would appreciate hearing your comments and concerns. Thank you for your support on May 8th.
