Tourism conference to include Road to Buffalo project

Local group Women for a Better Sanders County recently secured an invite to present their project Road to the Buffalo at the upcoming Governor’s Conference on Tourism and Recreation this month.

Information about the local project will be shared during the panel on Destination Development.

A presentation on the historic Indian road used by the earliest fur traders in the region will be presented by Linda Haywood of Thompson Falls. She will be presenting information about the history behind the project and ideas used by local supporters to enable the group to raise funds for the project.

The group was able to raise enough funds to enable them to match a grant from the Department of Tourism that boosted the total funding to nearly $14,000.

The funds raised will allow the installation of four interpretive signs along Montana 200 in the fall. Two of the sign locations will sit adjacent to the Noxon bridge, one near David Thompson Monument in Thompson Falls and a third at the roadside wildlife viewing area at Weeksville.

The Montana State Department of Transportation will also be providing an additional sign to be erected at the Montana-Idaho border.
