Bruce Frye Memorial draws bevy of shooters
Once again the sun shone down on the Plains Trap Club for the annual Bruce Frye Memorial ATA Shoot.
The local trap club had the grounds looking pristine as they welcomed shooters from all over to the weekend’s last big event for the year. Shooters drove and flew in from all over, including as far away as Alabama, Arizona, Washington, Idaho and even Calgary, Canada.
The two-day event was filled with events for shooters, including singles, doubles, 50 Pots, the Joe Petroni, Four Corner Purse, and Clawson 100. Once again accompanying the cash prizes for competitors were the silver coins as seen last year.
Being the tournament is a memorial shoot for Bruce Frye, it is only fitting to hail commemoration as he was an avid coin collector and hobbyist. Campsites were once again packed full with shooters ready for the ATA event. With plenty of shooters turning out for the memorial, it would be the veterans that truly turned out in numbers.
There were approximately six registered lady shooters, one new shooter, three juniors and 21 veterans registered at the event, among the plethora of other shooters.
Numbers were slightly down at this year’s event compared to last year, but that didn’t hinder the competition spirit over the weekend. Once again, local businesses came on board for the Plains Trap Club 50 Pots competition over the weekend, such as Plains Auto Parts, RTI Fabrication, Rehbein Ford, Jermyn Logging, Trails End Mini Storage and Vanilla Gorilla.
As the Saturday afternoon wrapped up in the early hours of the evening, Plains Trap Club member James Jermyn picked up his tradition of being the Saturday Night Calcutta auctioneer as shooters and their families had a little fun as they bought their favorite shooter — in hopes of taking the calcutta win on Sunday.
