Two local scholarships are now available for graduates in Sanders County, including one from Scotchman Peaks Wilderness and another from the Bob Marshall Music Fesvial.

Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness offers an annual scholarship for the best essay written by a graduating senior on the theme “A most memorable wilderness experience.”

This scholarship is offered in 10 different schools around Scotchman Peaks, including Noxon and Thompson Falls, schools in Sanders County.

The best essay for each school receives a $300 scholarship to be spent in any manner the recipient wishes. The best essay overall receives an extra $300.

There is no minimum GPA requirement and entrants do not have to be looking to continuing their studies after high school.

The scholarship money will be paid directly to the individual upon successful graduation and can be used in any manner that they choose.

The essay can be submitted digitally either typed or written, the format must be double spaced and be between 500-750 words in 12-point font of Word format.

The deadline for essay entries is April 13.

The Bob Marshall Music Festival’s “Open Your Mind On The Open Road” scholarship will see one to four recipients from Montana high schools broaden their horizons on a paid $3,000 road trip.

The road trip is designed to broaden a students horizons, push the recipients outside their comfort zone while teaching them valuable life lessons and skills.

Ideally the recipients will go on a seven- to 14-day road trip. The scholarship money must be used for the road trip and has conditions to which money has to be spent. There is also the opportunity for the winners to use a vehicle specifically proved for the trip or they can use their own personal vehicle.

Recipients have to choose at least six different tasks to complete. Tasks include: sleep in a tent, pay it forward, do something that scares you, have meal with a stranger, use an alias to get directions, visit a college campus or perhaps take time to breath in the smells and take in the environment around you.

With long list to choose from, there are some that have the opportunity to truly give a recipient a chance to see the world from a different angle before they hit their studies.

Student applications should include a short bio, your name, school and post-high school plans.

A students application should also include what they like to do for fun and a little about their ambitions. Judges want to see a student’s seize-the-day attitude.

All applications must be submitted by May 1. Travel must be between July 1 and Aug. 30.Apply at www.thebobmusic.com.
