Born in Missoula and raised in nearby Plains, Joe’s childhood was spent largely outdoors, enjoying all that the Montana countryside had to offer. Joe graduated from Plains High School in 1966 and began working in the local sawmill, beginning a career of hard work that would lead him to becoming an operator in the Operating Engineers Local 400. In the spring of 1982 Joe Benson met a charming waitress by the name of Lissa, and by Nov. 12 of 1983 they were married. Joe and Lissa eventually moved to Billings where they raised their three children Barry, Cody and Tianna.

In the fall of 1998 the family relocated to Tucson, Arizona where Joe would spend the rest of his career working for Granite construction. He retired from Granite construction in June of 2015. Joe enjoyed his retirement travelling with his wife, Lissa, and making new friends everywhere he went.
