Summer Swim Meet returns to Plains

Hundreds of swimmers once again flocked to the Plains pool as the local Piranhas swim team hosted their annual meet.

The Plains pool park was all about tent city as those that came in for the weekend’s event set up shelters and day shade around the fenceline of the pool — cheering on kids throughout Saturday and Sunday.

There were around nine teams that came to Plains to compete over a range of events from midgets’ groups through seniors; kids were cheering on mates and soaking up the sun.

Both days saw the meet begin at 9:30 a.m. with swimmers gathering at the staging area as officials grouped them in their respective lineups for when they entered the pool.

This year there were a few warmup/cool down breaks implemented within the event to give swimmers the chance to reduce the chance of injuries.

This saw a nice break for the moms, dads, family and friends to have a chance to catch their breath, or grab a spot alongside the fence to cheer on their favorite swimmers.

Teammates also ensured that every swimmer from every team had some cheering and encouragement as they made a turn at the end of the pool.

Even though there were a few first-comers that competed over the weekend, it didn’t matter if they glided through the water at great speeds, or plugged along, the crowd and coaches that lined the sides of the pool cheered loud for a solid finish.

Like years past, Piranhas swim team moms and dads volunteered, and stepped up to help officiate the meet to ensure it ran smoothly.

All together there was 70 events that were held during the swim meet. From preliminary heats to finals, Plains was packed full of swimmers last weekend — enjoying some friendly competition amongst the swimmers.
