Last week social media was abuzz with reports of an apparent bear attack at Thompson River.

Though it is unknown exactly what caused an adult male to sustain apparent injuries that required medical attention; Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks did investigate the incident.

The state wildlife agency’s spokesman Dillon Tabish confirmed that the incident did not show the result of a bear attack.

“FWP investigated and was unable to find evidence of a bear at the scene,” Tabish said in a statement.

Still, authorities are urging campers and recreational activity enthusiasts to be properly prepared when heading into the backcountry.
