Super Saturday not dampened by drizzly sky

A wet Saturday didn’t dampen people’s enthusiasm as a number of events took place throughout Mineral County. From yards sales to tournaments, people braved the chilly weather with frequent rain showers to get together and enjoy some community activities.

The day started with a rousing game of Kickball in Alberton at 8 a.m. where three teams braved the rain to help raise funds for the PEAK Foundation and Alberton Railroad Days Foundation (ARRDF). The teams were PEAK Foundation; Alberton Railroad Days Foundation; and Meat Sweats. The Meat Sweats won against PEAK in the final round with a 15-11 victory. Funds raised will be donated to the Alberton School Music Department and for Alberton Community Center windows. Later in the afternoon, the ARRDF hosted a pig roast in the community park starting at 2:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, on the west end of the county, the Happy Homemakers with the De Borgia Schoolhouse Foundation, hosted a Cowboy Breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m. followed by a hot dog lunch at noon.

The yard sale held outside the little, historic white schoolhouse was filled with baked goods, plants, and plenty of treasures. This was part of their Annual Yard Sale which was held on Friday and Saturday in conjunction with the St. Regis town wide sale.

The St. Regis Town-Wide Yard Sale was hosted by the St. Regis Community Council. People could pick up a map at the community center, which led them to 15 sales stretching from Old Mill Loop north of town to the Sloway Exit heading east on Interstate 90. Lots of items were for up grabs including a 2001 Chevy Lumina, antiques and household items.

Several sellers said Friday was a beautiful day with a lot of people showing up, and despite the rain, Saturday also turned out to be a busy day for several homeowners.

Up the road, the Superior Ranger District was scheduled to host their annual Kids Fish Day at the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery at Haugan. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to the bad weather.

At the Mineral County Library, author Christine Carbo made a visit to talk about her new book, “A Sharp Solitude: A Novel of Suspense” in Superior. Her book is described as a “gripping new mystery from the fresh new voice in the thriller genre,” by New York Times bestselling author, Steve Berry.

Her visit started at noon and lasted until 2 p.m. which included a cake for refreshments following her talk. Florence Evans with the library said the event was well attended and everyone had fun visiting with Christine.

Later in the afternoon, the Mineral Community Hospital Relay for Life Team hosted Basket Bingo starting at 5 p.m. at the Superior Elementary School. The theme this year was Father’s Day, “usually we have the event on Mother’s Day weekend but that day was pretty crowded and so we moved it to honor those dads,” said the event coordinator, Jenifer Mitchell. “There were several winners this year and the tension was taught at times with those waiting for their winning number to be called!”

Winners were able to choose from a variety of fun gift baskets with funds raised to help support cancer patients in Mineral County. Mitchell also wanted to thank all the volunteers who helped with the baskets, as well as setting up and tearing down the tables and chairs.
