Alberton students celebrate 'I Love to Read' month

Alberton students were “Reading for the Stars” last month as part of “I Love to Read Month.” For every 15 minutes of reading, they received a star in their “space passport,” which allowed their spaceship to move to the next planet. Once they reached the planet, they would receive prizes. Everyone started on the Sun and eventually made their way to Pluto.
All the students received a prize, said Alberton Librarian Christina Wekkin. “It was very visual and kept them motivated to move to the next planet, and it was a lot of fun.”
Prizes were donated from different businesses, including the University of Montana, which gave items including backpacks, books and stickers. The grand prize was a party for 12 at the Hub in Missoula which included laser tag, game tokens and pizza worth nearly $200. Second-place winners received individual Hub passes and food coupons.
There were two category levels, grades 3 through 5 and pre-kindergarten through grade 2. Fifth-grader Raeleen Czerp was the overall winner with over 4,000 reading minutes. Second-grader Delilah Bean won the grand prize for the lower level with 1,105 minutes. Classmate Ava McGaughy won second place with 1,025 minutes, and Gage Horn won upper-level second place with 3,522 minutes.
The Masons Lodge in Superior also donated two bikes, which were put into a drawing. Bike winners were Evan Fehlings and Jaxson Zimmerman.
