Students learn about health and nutrition during annual Fun Run

Grades 5 and 6 ran a 5K during the Mineral County Fun Run on May 9 starting from the Superior Elementary parking lot.
Kindergarten through grades 4 ran a mile for the Annual Mineral County Fun Run.

Hundreds of grade school students strapped on their tennis shoes and geared up to participate in the Annual Mineral County Fun Run. It was held in Superior on May 9 and kindergarten through sixth-graders looped their way around Clark Fork and Osprey Drive near the Mineral Community Hospital. Kindergarten through fourth-graders ran the one mile course, while fifth- and sixth-graders did the 5K. Teachers, parents and community members were also welcome to participate in the event. Lower grades students were also allowed to participate in the 5K.
The first group of youngster, K through 4, lined up near the Superior Elementary School parking lot and where School Principal, Logan Labbe, started the race as runners shot off the starting line. Cheered on by the Superior School Bobcat mascot, the St. Regis Tiger mascot and Smokey the Bear.
Next, grades 5 and 6 lined up where Alberton Senior, and track athlete, Jesse Shaske, played the role of a “rabbit” and led the group around the 5K track. Shaske runs the 400, 800, 1600 meter races, as well as is a member of the Clark Fork relay teams. Unfortunately, some of the runners lost the “rabbit” and ran a smaller course, which disqualified their times.
The 5K winners mirrored the “Run for the Pool” 5K held last October where Superior 6th grader, Lucas Kovalsky won for the boys with an unofficial time of 25:06 and 5th grader, Heather Haskin won for the girls with a time of 25:51. In October, Lucas had a slightly better time of 24:40, but Heather improved her time over 26:38 set at the pool race.
In the mile run, St. Regis students Chet Hill, grade 1 and Conner Lulis, grade 3, crossed the finish line together. Lulis came in second place during last year’s Fun Run which was held in St. Regis.
There were nearly 300 students, teachers and community members at the event and after the race, everyone enjoyed lunch and an awards ceremony for the race winners. In the afternoon, some students participated in additional health related activities including yoga, water safety, nutrition, and bike safety.
