Kinder Cafe at Plains School features fun 1950s theme
Katie Hillerman’s kindergarten classroom at Plains School was transformed into a 1950s-style diner called Mrs. Hillerman’s Kinder Cafe last Friday, and it was a very “fun day” for all of her students, and their teacher.
Hillerman, with help from other school staff, decorated the classroom in 1950s motif, including a three-dimensional soda shop and Kinder Cafe counter.
Kids wore what were called “soda jerk” hats (from back in the day) and classy eyeglasses to fit the festive mood perfectly.
Toward the end of the day, the kindergartners enjoyed an old-fashioned milkshake. Then was time for a special “sock hop,” during which the kids learned such dances as the Hand Jive. And they were guided with online instruction on how to dance to tunes like, “Rock Around the Clock” and “Shout!”
Hillerman got the idea for the special 50s Diner day from a program called “Classroom Transformations,” which turns a teacher’s room into something quite exciting and educational as well.
Donors give money on a website that provides funding for books for students, such as kindergartners in Plains.
Hillerman said she recently received three Ipads for student use. Funds have been provided up to $500 for a teacher’s needs.
“It doesn’t matter how much they give,” Hillerman said of donors on the website. To make a contribution, go online to donorschoose.org/Katie.Hillerman. It’s a great way to contribute to students’ education.
