Clark Fork athletes honored at year-end banquet
Clark Fork Lady Mountain Cats received their varsity letters and awards during a banquet on Nov. 14 in Superior. Madison Mask received All-State and All-Conference honors, and Margaret Parkin and Emmah Baughman were named All-Conference.
The Clark Fork Mountain Cats football team members received their varsity letters and awards on Nov. 14. The 8-man Class C team ended the season 6-4 and traveled to the state playoffs in Great Falls, were they lost to Great Falls Central.
Eight members of the Clark Fork Mountain Cats Class C 8-man football team received All-Conference honors. Trey Green and Isaiah Kovalsky made All-State; and Michael Spence and Korey Radford were selected for the All-Star game, which will be played next June.
Student athletes from Alberton and Superior met in the Superior High School gym on Wednesday, Nov. 14. They gathered with family and friends to celebrate their accomplishments during football and volleyball seasons. The boys ended their season 6-4 with a playoff game in Great Falls. The girls were District 13C champions and traveled to Divisionals.
Head Coach Jeff Schultz started things off by praising his eight-man, Class C football team, “It was a fun year and everyone is proud of the outcome. These guys grew up from being boys and are on their way to becoming men. They improved at every game but it was more than improving their skills. This was a group of brothers who really enjoyed being a part of the team.”
The Mountain Cats averaged 60 points a game and went from a 1-9 season to 6-4. It was also the first time the Clark Fork Mountain Cats, which is the Superior/Alberton School coop, went to the playoffs in Great Falls where they lost to the Great Falls Central Mustangs.
Shultz also thanked his team managers, Jordan Taapken and Sophia Krutilla, and assistant coaches Charlie Crabb; Matt Doughty; and Travis Stroot.
Awards were handed out which included 16 varsity letters and several individual awards. Including Trey Green and Isaiah Kovalsky making All-State and Michael Spence and Korey Radford making the All-Star game which will be played next June.
Next, head coach Toni Labbe presented awards to her volleyball girls, “We had a surprisingly successful season and I’m so proud of all of their accomplishments.”
A season that took the team to Divisionals after taking first place at Districts. It was the first time the Mountain Cats had achieved that level of success. Labbe said it was a phenomenal season despite the team being short with most of the team under 5-foot, 7-inches. They were also plagued with illness and injuries with 11 players by the end.
Along with thanking parents and her assistant coach Cary Chamberlain, she also thanked Tammy Wippert for driving and decorating the bus, providing the girls with snacks, and spearheading a sheriff’s escort out of town to the tournaments.
Now, basketball and wrestling season for the Clark Fork Mountain Cats has started with a kickoff tournaments to be held on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 with basketball at Frenchtown High School and wrestling in Polson.
