Parents as Teachers is holding a diaper drive from Oct. 29 to Nov. 9 to collect a goal of 300 packages of diapers for distribution to families in need in Mineral County. Parents as Teachers provides educational materials to parents about child development; screens children for potential delays; and offers general parenting support. Diapers will be distributed on the evening of Nov. 14 in St. Regis along with an educational event. Choir/chime practice for Christmas program

The annual community-wide Christmas Program will be held on Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at the LDS Church in Superior this year. Choir and chime practices have started and the public is encouraged to participate. They can use singers and people who play instruments. Choir practice is Sundays at the Methodist Church in Superior at 5 p.m. and the Chime Choir practice is on Sat. at 10:30 a.m. Contact Nancy Wilson at 406-822-4548 for more information.

Christmas is coming

The annual Christmas bazaar will be held on Dec. 8 in Superior and they are now taking reservations for table spaces. Call Eileen at 406-242-0317.

Holiday Food Drive

Mineral Community Hospital’s Holiday Food Drive is in full swing through Dec. 27 for donations to local food pantries. There are seven other drop-off locations for non-perishable food: Castle’s Market, TrailWest Bank, Superior Senior Center, Stang’s Food Center, Jack Lincoln Memorial Clinic, St. Regis Senior Center and Alberton Feed & Supply.

All donations will be gathered and weighed by the hospital and then distributed to the Superior School Food Pantry, Mineral County Food Bank and the Alberton Food Pantry. For more information, contact Monte Turner at 406-822-5122 or go online to www.MineralCommunityHospital.org.

Montana Nightriders Snowmobile Club meeting

Senior Centers

Superior Senior Center serves free dinners to residents who are 90 years old and older. Dinner is every Wednesday starting at 4:30 p.m.

St. Regis Senior Center serves meals every Thursday at noon and on the last Monday of the month at 6 p.m. The menu is Nov. 8, honey glazed ham; Nov. 15, sloppy joes; Nov. 25, Hispanic meal; and Nov. 29, chili burgers.

The Alberton Senior Center serves lunches each Tuesday and Thursday at noon.

Montana Youth Election

HELENA — The 2018 YouthVote, hosted by the Montana Secretary of State’s Office, will be held Nov. 2, before the 2018 Federal and State Election. YouthVote is a unique opportunity for students from kindergarten through high school across Montana to lend their voices to the monumental 2018 election.

Montana will join states across the country when students at public schools, private schools, and homeschools will cast their ballots in the YouthVote election. Students will vote on races such as the highly visible U.S. Senate and U.S. House. They will also have some fun ballot items to encourage younger voters to express their opinions about topics of interest to them.

All school-aged children in Montana are invited and encouraged to participate in the 2018 YouthVote Election, which was created by the Montana Legislature in 1991. Secretary Stapleton said, “The goals and mission of this program are still the same as when it was created: to ‘provide the youth of Montana with practical experience in the democratic process.’”

Polls will be open on Nov. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Principals, teachers, and parents can learn more by going to youthvote.sosmt.gov.

Commenting open on water judge applicants

In September, the Judicial Nomination Commission began accepting applications for the position of associate water judge for the Montana Water Court to fill the seat to be vacated by Judge Douglas Ritter. Ritter is retiring effective Dec. 31, 2018.

The Commission has received applications from the following attorneys: Marjorie Black; Stephen R. Brown; Dana Elias Pepper; and Anna Margret Stradley.

The Commission is currently soliciting public comment on the applicants. The applications may be viewed at http://courts.mt.gov/supreme/boards/jud_nomination. Comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, 2018.

The Montana Water Court, located in Bozeman, was created by the 1979 Montana Legislature. The Water Court has exclusive jurisdiction over the adjudication of all water rights claims in Montana. The associate water judge is appointed by the Chief Justice of the Montana Supreme Court. This judgeship is not subject to general election. Public comment is an important part of the appointment process, especially given that Montanans do not have an opportunity to vote on the associate water judge position.

The commission welcomes public comment, either in writing (e-mail or paper) or via telephone at 406-841-2972. These comments, which become part of an applicant’s file, will be posted on the Commission’s web page and forwarded to the Chief Justice.
