Cabinet District scheules prescribed burns

In a recent press release from the USDA Forest Service-Kootenai National Forest, locals around the Trout Creek area should be aware of the upcoming fall prescribed burning program.

They outlined a number of areas that are planned for the forthcoming timber management practice.

Areas in which will you will see prescribed burns are; Piles, Beaver Creek, Cabinet Ranger Station, Trout Creek Admin site, Cabinet campgrounds, Smeads, Bull River and Beaver Peak. Minton Trout Broadcast Burning, 2,939 acres.

The release said that the burns occurring this fall will transpire in timber sale units and will consist of machine oles in harvest units or the harvest units themselves.

Smoke will be visible during the burns and could potentially continue to be seen for a few days afterward.

Authorities also advised that they will be doing a wildlife burn of several natural fuels units in the Trout Creek Drainage.

Burns will occur when the air dispersion and weather forecasts are favorable; and will be mindful of the air quality ensuring they comply with air quality regulations and will be monitored by the Montana/Idaho State Airshed Group.

“We understand that smoky conditions can be unpleasant, We sill strive to mitigate the smoke effects and reduce the impacts to the public. We appreciate the community for being supportive of our fuels program,” said the release.

They also urged motorists to travel with caution when approaching smoky areas, as the possibility of people and equipment may be present.

Prescribed burns are an important means for natural resource management practices. They are also used in timber harvest units to treat slash created by harvest activities and to efficiently prepare sites for planting or natural regeneration.
