As fall sports loom around the corner this schoolyear, Superior High School will see a familiar face as the new athletic director.

Principal Chris Clairmont passed the athletic director torch to Byron Quinlan, a guidance counselor whose been at Superior High School for six years.

Originally from Arizona, Quinlan coached varsity football, soccer and basketball before moving to Mineral County to continue his counseling career. He also served as the assistant football coach and the junior high basketball coach.

“Being a prior coach, it’s the next step for me being involved in all sports,” Quinlan said.

As Quinlan steps up as the athletic director, Clairmont is stepping down after ten years to focus more on academics.

“I felt it was best, with all the time I was spending on the athletic director piece, I felt it was best for me to step away and try to be more effective in what I was actually hired to do,” Clairmont said.

With Clairmont’s departure, Quinlan saw this is a great opportunity support his love for high school athletics. Quinlan also says he also enjoys the additional group of kids from Alberton, who join Superior in a cooperative team.

“I think Superior’s rich in tradition with their athletics program and it’s been nice for me to kind of observe and see how things are done,” Quinlan said.
