Last Tuesday the National Honor Society and the Student Council of Plains High School hosted their annual turkey bowl, a flag football game held in the school’s gymnasium to kick off the Thanksgiving break.

Players were picked out of each class and put into two teams that faced off against each other on Tuesday afternoon. Six members from each grade were chosen and the freshmen and seniors were paired together against the sophomores and juniors.

The sophomore/ junior team was led by Mike Tatum and the team elected to be named the “Huskies” while the senior/freshman team was coached by Katy Mitchell and they named their team the “Average Joes.”

The game was refereed by George Sherwood and Lisa Brown. The game was quite one-sided, with the Average Joes running circles around the Huskies until finally the Joes ended up coming out on top.

They now have bragging rights until next year, which was their only prize.

The school has been doing the Turkey Bowl for five years and uses the weeks leading up to the bowl to raise canned food for the community.

During the weeks building up, the students could bring in canned goods that will be donated to the Plains Food Bank for local families.

The National Honor Society also sold raffle tickets to win one of 10 holiday turkeys. These tickets were drawn throughout the game.

Many families that won, however, would turn around and donate the turkeys back into the community, as explained by senior Dakota Butcher.

“We could win one, but we really don’t need another turkey so we would donate it back to someone who does,” Butcher said. “Students who brought in two canned goods got their name into a drawing for gift cards to one of several local businesses.

At half time students could participate in a halftime game where they would try to make baskets while wearing beer goggles.

The winners were the ones able to make the most baskets and would be awarded a certificate for coffee at Uncommon Grounds.

Each participant in in the halftime game also got an M&M cookie made by Heather Worrall.
