District tourney begins this week

With regular season play over, the St. Regis teams will travel to the District 14C Tournament in Pablo Feb. 14-16. The Lady Tigers were 11-7 overall and 5-7 in the district going into Saturday evening’s game against the Lincoln Lynx.

The fifth-seeded Lady Tigers will face No. 4 Hot Springs on Thursday, Feb. 14 in the District 14C Tournament in Pablo. Both times the Lady Tigers have faced the Savage Heat during season play they lost.

“But we’ll play with confidence and beat them,” said head coach Brooks Sanford. “The girls can all handle the ball and shoot. They can’t just guard one player, they will have to guard all of us.”

The team is losing three seniors this year, leaving two juniors to fill the top ranks next season. Along with seven freshman who will move up with another year under their belt. “They’re a pretty tight group and they’ve come a long way this year,” said Brooks. “I think we’ll have a big season next year.”

Going into the Lincoln game on Saturday the St. Regis boys were 2-10 where they had beaten Two Eagle River twice during season play. At district, the sixth-seeded Tigers will face third-seed Hot Springs.

“I wish we had won more games during the season,” said head coach Jesse Allan. “We have the ability to do so.”

He said he’s looking forward to next year where the team will be bringing back all of their players except their lone senior, JD Booker. “The team’s future looks bright if the boys continue to work hard,” he said.

Currently, there are two sets of brothers playing, junior,Nick Day and his brother Tanner, who is a freshman. Also, there is freshman Adam Ball and eighth grader Caleb Ball.

“Having them play together has strengthened their relationships as brother,” said Allan. “They fight for each other, not with each other.”

Next year, three freshman will move up into their second year of play as sophomores. As well as two stepping in as seniors next year with one junior and a freshman.

Clark Fork plays in the District 13C Tournament in Frenchtown on Feb. 14-16.
