Results from Hot Springs, Noxon school board elections

Tuesday, May 7 patrons of the Hot Springs and Noxon school districts cast their ballots for candidates running for open school board positions. At the same, Hot Springs District No. 14 J voters made the choice to either support or deny support for a $30,000 school district levy, which would have been added to the general fund.

School board elections in other districts in Sanders County were cancelled since races were uncontested.

In Hot Springs, the general fund levy proposition failed. “Yes” votes totaled 158 and there were 214 “no” votes, which meant that 57 percent of voters were against the levy compared to 53 percent who supported it. Had it passed, the levy would have provided $30,000 per year for general operations and maintenance.

Had the levy passed, property taxes on a home with a market value of $100,000 would have increased by about $19.94 per year.

THERE WAS one contested race for one three-year term on the Hot Springs School Board, and it was a close three-way battle. Julie White received 130 votes, while Crystal Graham was just five votes behind with 125. Michael L. Mueller garnered 121 votes.

Frederick A. “Ricky” Depoe Jr. ran unopposed for a one-year seat as trustee in the Hot Springs district. He had 336 votes.

According to Election Deputy Bobbi Christenson in the Sanders County Clerk and Recorder Office, all the voting in the Hot Springs district was certified Monday, May 13 with the votes the same as the unofficial tallies.

IN NOXON School District No. 10, there was one contested race. The unofficial total showed that Tamra Weltz was first and Christopher Stough second a three-way race for two three-year seats as school trustee. Weltz received 259 votes. That was 75 more than runner-up Stough, who had 184 votes. Andrew Chaboya Cabaccang had 171 votes for third. There were 614 total votes cast. The Noxon voting was to be certified during Monday night’s meeting of the board of trustees.

There were two other seats open for school trustees in the Noxon District, representing Trout Creek. There was only one person to file, and that was Ben Freeman.

John Holland was the lone candidate to file for an open seat on the Plains School Board while John Wilson was the only person to file in Thompson Falls, and Mike Linderman in Trout Creek.
